The survey on the Henderson Pawz web site was conducted on April 12-13. The methodology we used for this survey was a questionnaire where we asked a series of questions asking the teacher and students of Henderson Bay High School how they felt about the idea of Henderson Bay converting to a big picture school. Big picture school is an alternative way of learning and teaching; its mission statement is based off of three major principles.
The way big picture works isn't with your stereotypical boring teacher in their boring, beige classroom. Instead It all begins with your Advisor. Your Advisor will work with you and a small group of students to find what motivates and interest each student. Then you have your mentor, which could be from any profession such as, a lawyer, engineer, merchant, ect.., guides each student’s internship. The parent is actively enrolled as a resource to the BP community. And then last but not least, the student (and peers) interact to reinforce each others passion for real work in the real world. Gig Harbor Boatshop Maritime Mentorship
HBHS students met with master boat builders today at Gig Harbor Boatworks. The visit included meeting Guy Hoppen and his staff, a tour of their facilities and insight into their maritime mentorship program. Gig Harbor Boatworks is offering a mentorship opportunity to a handful of HBHS students. Starting next semester, our goal is to have students work at the boat shop one to two days a week until the end of the school learning the boat building trade from masters in the field. One student said, "You mean I could work down here twice a week during school, that would be awesome!" We could create individualized learning plans for the students to replace the seat time they miss while in the mentorship program. One of your students really shined today. Randal walked up to Guy, shook his hand and said, "Thank you very much!" He also expressed his interest in this mentorship program.
John Selfors Curriculum Facilitator-College, Career, and Life Readiness Attending the trip with Erin were: Isaac B, Devin C, Elijah C, Bryan E, Josh J, Justin K, Keith M, Kannon S, Coby S and Connor J
This trip was very cool! I liked seeing how they make the boats. ~Elijah

Hash - Slinging Slashers
vs Carrot tops |
Food is so great! Henderson Bay incorporates a competition into Nutrition and Food Prep that gets students who want to cook doing so and being competitive. Right now the cooking class is split in half into two teams, and that means the class is competing.
There are the Hash-Slinging Slashers and Carrot Tops. The food that they're making is a breakfast food aimed at kids ages 2-15 years old. Hash Slinging Slashers are making something called Cup O’ Breakfast and it contains egg, cheese, spinach, tomato, and hash browns. Carrot Tops are making a Berry Blast Smoothie containing protein powder, peanut butter, strawberry, banana, milk, and ice. We had taste testers come in today to try them and we will see the who the winner is on Monday! The result was a tie so everyone is a winner! ~Jacob |
Interact-Rotary Luncheon
12/5/2017 Photos by Jai On December 5th, 2017, Henderson Bay graciously held a Rotary luncheon for Midday Rotary and it was possibly the most student involved Rotary meeting at HBHS we’ve had so far.
Lindzy Jackson beautifully sang the National Anthem to start off the event, which segwayed into the Rotary pledge, formally initiating the meeting. Aidan and Nick sang, Celina danced and the Midday Rotary people got to hear the stories of different Henderson students. ~Nick |

Wednesday 15th, some students went on a field trip to visit Harbor Wild Watch.
Very few of us did go, but we managed to have a good time learning about the animals that live in the harbor. It was a little bit rainy but we managed to stay dry enough under some tarps. It was a beautiful rainy day overall. We had more of an educational field trip this time around, yet every field trip we all learn something.
This time we got to learn about the harbor and the wildlife in it. Rachel and Stena were our guides, telling us about our beloved harbor and the animals in it. Each of us made a keychain out of a fuzzy stick and beads, each bead representing a salmon's life. It was a fun time going and meeting Rachel and Stena. ~JAI

October 18: Fall Habitat for Humanity Field Trip
for Community Service |
|
Photos by Jai and Heaven
We at Henderson Bay High School (HBHS) went on our first volunteer field trip with Habitat For Humanity. There was a small group for our first one, but hopefully in the future we will have a lot more people helping us out. This time around, we were helping move materials to help out so they can build more buildings for people who need them. All of us who went on this trip had a great time helping out. Even if we just moved stuff around, we all enjoyed helping others and each other.
It was raining like crazy, but we got done and had a lot of time left, so we arrived at school an hour early. But it is a fun and easy way to get volunteer hours. So if anyone needs volunteer hours, the volunteer trips are free, you just pay by helping out, that's all.

The many faces of Sam

Sam Miller, a Street Outreach Specialist, is teaming up with the Peninsula School District to work with not only the students, but also the staff to understand and work with substance abuse, and the simple, yet complex concept of growing up, and also intends to assist students and staff with drug related problems, may it be students who may be abusing drugs, to a staff member who has a loved one who is abusing substances. He will also just be offering guidance to students that need it, whether that means finding a homing shelter for you, or just being someone to talk to, he’s here for anyone. I talked with Sam about what he plans on doing here at Henderson Bay, and also what he looks forward to while working in the building.
He looks forward to working with students and sharing his wisdom with everyone here, although the whole idea of working in a high school is intimidating. I am very, very excited to see him around Henderson Bay because as a recovering addict, I can learn a lot from someone who has been recovering much longer than I have. During his speech, he gave us a little peek at his life, including his time in jail, his struggles to clean from substances, and also gave us a look into his family life. Sam is a very honest, genuine human being and we are so, so excited to see him around Henderson Bay! ~Nick |

Senior Awards Assembly
|
|
Yesterday evening at Harbor Ridge Middle School, Henderson Bay hosted their first Senior Scholarship Awards night. In the past scholarships were combined with graduation, meaning that there was less time for scholarship recipients to meet and thank their donors. This way, graduation will be shorter and more personal. A huge shoutout goes to Robin, Linda and Terry for encouraging the graduating class to complete their notebooks and organizing the event. They have been incredible in helping me realize how important these opportunities are and why they shouldn’t be passed up and I hope that’s the case for my graduating classmates as well. These past months have been the best in my four years of high school and I’m excited to see what the future brings! ~Bre
Debbie Macomber visits Henderson
|
|
There are two people to thank for the Debbie Macomber visit: Shaina and Robin. One day, Shaina was in Robin’s office and saw a novel by Debbie, telling her how much she loves Ms. Macomber. Working her magic, Robin pulled the strings together to arrange Debbie’s visit during fourth period. Not only is she a fabulous author and kind, pure and energetic spirit, she is based in Port Orchard and is a Washington native! She is funny, honest and blunt, down to earth and positive. It was like having a motivational speaker in the room.
Debbie and Robin’s mother went to high school together, which is how this pleasant visit was arranged. She also has twelve successful novels under her belt that have hit the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Her determination to be a writer began as early as thirteen years old when she wrote a short fictional story. However, Macomber’s life was not always what it appears to be today.
She didn’t learn to read until the fifth grade due to her dyslexia. Her teacher would force her to stay inside during recess until she finished her spelling and writing. With as much determination in that body, the goal she someday hoped to accomplish seemed like a long shot. While starting off as a young writer after graduating high school, manuscript after manuscript was rejected.
Debbie admitted that the letters of disappointment that arrived in her mailbox was not where she learned rejection from; it was being turned down by a classmate of hers that she invited to every Sadie Hawkin’s dance for four years in a row during high school. She said since then, she has always known that she is a natural born writer looking to develop her story writing abilities. -BRE

WATER FOUNTAIN DEDICATIONMAY 5, 2017
Today was the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new refillable water fountain. The process of receiving the fountain from a grant took two years and was a job taken on by multiple leadership students during the two year window including Erik Clarkson. There was a raffle basket with every student’s name in the school. The winners for the plastic bottles were Brennan and Sierra. Stainless steel water bottles were awarded to our Superintendent Rob Manahan, Assistant Superintendent Dan Gregory and Bob Dyckman. Because Aidan and Gavin were the masterminds behind the logo featured on the water bottles and originally produced for "Henderson Pawz", they did the honors of cutting the ribbon. ~Story by Bre

May 3 was the Habitat for Humanity field trip where students worked on houses for people who aren't fortunate enough to have a place to live. I wanted to talk to the people who went on this trip to see what it was like and its impact. I interviewed Sully and Aidan. This is what they had to say about the trip.
Sully: To me the field trip was about helping people who are the exact same as me but just aren't as blessed, I got a chance to feel like I was finally really doing something about a problem that there is in the country that has been a thing for just about forever. Going on the trip let me meet new people who I knew where good people because we were all there trying to help out people and make a difference. Overall I thought that the trip was a great experience and I'd like to go on another one like it sometime.
Aidan: To me the Habitat for Humanity trip was an amazing experience, it gave me a chance to feel less like just another person who keeps to himself and goes through life and more like someone who gets out and does stuff and really makes an effort to try and help others around them. It made me feel really good about myself, it boosted my confidence and made me feel overall more happy with myself and the life that I live. Going on the field trip gave me a chance to actually physically show that I'm grateful for the life that I live and that I'll do my best in order to make other people's lives great.

New Student Lunch |
On Friday, April 14th, 2017 Peter’s leadership class: Libby, Morgan, Justin, Maggie and myself welcomed our new students for the fourth quarter by having lunch with them. Luckily, Mr. Manahan was in the building to welcome the new students and say a few words after Brian spoke to the new students. It’s a surreal feeling to think that the final quarter of the school year snuck up on us. It feels like yesterday that I was in the new students’ shoes having lunch with a group of people new to Henderson Bay for the first semester of the 2016-2017 school year.
“The advantage is that it’s always good to have a fresh start. At Henderson you get to be who you really are. I think all three [Peninsula, Gig Harbor and Henderson] are awesome schools for the different experiences they have given me. Henderson is the most relationship oriented where I have been able to get to know students on a more personal basis.” -Brian With there being only a couple of months left for the school year, students should give it their all and continue to produce quality work. There are so many different reasons the students that walk through the doors of Henderson Bay High School made the decision to come to our school, but whatever the reason we are lucky to have our family continue to grow! ~Bre |

For the current semester leadership students are required to complete what is called a major project. For Libby’s project, she will be in charge of sweatshirt sales which is a continuation of a project a student completed last semester. Order forms for sweatshirts will be floating around to classrooms shortly and will be in the main office also. Justin is in charge of making announcements at each classroom as well as posters for Henderson’s upcoming field trips. Morgan is piloting a new project which is the most interesting to me. He will be in charge of the sales for the water bottles. The plastic bottle will be sold for $4 and the stainless steel will be sold for $8. What makes this project amazing besides the fact that it will be a new project is that the water bottles will have the Henderson Pawz logo on the bottle! ~Bre |
The school is installing a water bottle refilling station so we will have water bottles for sale. There is a stainless steel water bottle and a plastic water bottle with the Henderson Bay logo on them. The metal one is 25 oz and is $8. The plastic one is 20 oz and $4. Purchase from Terry.
