CRIMINAL DRONES
|
Recently in the month of March, drones usage by criminals have been involved in a sabotaging against the FBI, who were monitoring a hostage situation going on in an undisclosed location outside of a big US city. The FBI set up observation post to examine the hostage situation.
Out of nowhere, several drones flew in front of the observation towers and seriously messed up their operation. It completely blocked their view of monitoring. The FBI even said “we were then blind” after the unknown drones came out of nowhere. The drones were livestreaming what they were doing so that other members of the gang could watch the video on their cellphones and see what was happening. After blocking the view of the FBI, drones continued to counter-surveillance the FBI agents through the whole conflict. This isn’t the first case of criminal use of drones. All over the world drones have now been used for various crimes, and by various criminal organizations. Like in Colorado, Drones have been flown around with heat vision cameras so that criminals can scan for people growing marijuana indoors. Which gives them the information of which house they can rob. Not only for marijuana, but burglars have used drones to scout houses to rob. All across the US and Mexico’s border. The Cartel has also been involved in using drones to smuggle drugs over the border, scout the border, and even deliver phones and drugs into prisons for inmates that are involved with the cartel. The drone scouting of the border is really effective for them as using humans to scout the border was usually not as successful as drones are being for them. With a human, they can be detected by Border Patrol’s countermeasures to stop scouts. Like night vision cameras and heat sensors that can detect the human’s heat signature. But with drones (depending on the model or the quality) can be very undetectable. They can fly at high speeds, make very little noise, and will be in and out in a mere seconds, whilst whoever the drone is being flown by can sit back undetected, watch through the camera, and give feedback to his fellow members. The criminal drone use will progressively get worse and worse in the future. The countermeasures against criminal drone use is extremely hard for the U.S to tackle. Unlike in the middle-east where they have several drone-jamming equipment set up to fight against enemy drones. Drone-jamming equipment wouldn’t be suitable in environments like cities in the U.S. They don’t know how effective or how well it would be in countering the drones. Or even how the equipment could possibly mess with other electronics as well (like smartphones and wifi signals) or actual aircrafts that could be passing by the jamming signals. Until then, we will have to think of other various ways of dealing with the criminal drones, which will hopefully be a top priority because of how uninterrupted the drone usage is, and the major benefits that the information gathered with the drones is helping the criminal organizations. Especially because drones are being chosen over humans for various task and are doing it a lot more efficiently than a human would. |
