As we restructure learning at Henderson some exciting days are ahead. Last year this publication was written by students to create a voice through a dedicated journalism class. I'm not sure what the exact roll of HPAWZ will be as the year unfolds. Hopefully some students interested in communicating the evolution of Big Picture Learning will step up to publish student created articles as we develop our program. Looking forward to a great year. After the school shooting that happened in Florida leaving 17 people dead, the school made a rule that clear backpacks are mandatory. They were donated about 3000 clear backpacks for every student that goes to Parkland High school. They are also planning on added metal detectors in the near future. In thought, it's not a bad idea. But many students of Parkland High School have argued against this new implemented rule by comparing schools to more of a prison than an actual school now. Some argue that the clear backpacks will not prevent future attacks but also are infringing on privacy, also arguing that the rule takes away their individuality as a person. Many Florida students have customized their bags with some reading “This backpack is probably worth more than MY LIFE” with a $1.05 tag on it. Or “Prisoner #:0612074413” My opinion on the whole ordeal is that I don’t completely support clear backpacks because most of the attacks usually involve a gun that would not fit inside of their small bag (like the common AR-15 that have been used in many of the recent shootings). But I do support the idea of the metal detectors because the metal detector could easily detect anything fishy that isn’t an AR-15, like a knife or handgun. They also have been talking about increasing security and funding and focussing on mental health which would be a brilliant step of dealing with any potential threats in the future. Jared Guns in schools safer or scary?
I believe guns in school is safer as long as they are in the right hands. At Hendeerson Bay High School we have an ex-marine who should be able to carry a weapon in school. Personally I would feel safer. Greg is super respected and responsible about everything. During a lock down he said if someone breaks in that person would have to kill him to get to us. We also have a security guard here too. If they were armed and every school had this, it would cut down on school shootings because who is going to a place where people are armed? Would arming our teachers stop school shooting? I think there is no solution, the kids that shoot up the school sometimes kill themselves also. So if a teacher shoots the shooter they might save lives but the kid could just shoot the teacher first and then the kids. It’s messed up but true. In my opinion, there is no solution for these tragedies. Bottom line: Keep guns locked up and safe. ~Justin Welcome new student to Henderson Bay! It is great to hear that you are enlisting to an engaging school such as Henderson Bay. At Henderson Bay, we expect everyone to do their best each day whether it’s during school work or otherwise. If you are coming from Gig Harbor High School or one of the other larger schools, you will notice a lot of differences during your first day here. Some examples of such differences include smaller classes consisting of as low as 8 students and teachers being more involved with students here compared to other schools.
Some information that might be useful to you on your first day is knowing that it’s ok to ask questions when you are confused about something. When I came to Henderson Bay as a new student, I was extremely shy and didn’t want to speak to anyone I didn’t know. Whenever I worked on a daily assignment in class, I would occasionally get confused on a certain topic or question. Instead of asking for help or an explanation about the topic, I would stare at the assignment trying to figure it out on my own. This made my grade drop quite frequently and cause myself to become stressed. My reasoning for not asking questions was not wanting to disrupt everyone else who was working or bothering the teacher with what they were currently doing. It wasn’t until I learned that teachers are happy to help answer questions that my grade began to increase. With the previous information in mind, you might be wondering what else to expect from Henderson Bay High School. There are many great things to expect from Henderson Bay such as kind teachers, respectful students and the expectation from others to do your best each day. You will also expect frequent daily assignments, engaging class activities and the lack of homework compared to other schools. Now that you have enrolled to Henderson Bay, I hope the information I have provided with be at least somewhat helpful to you on your first day and so on. My name is Celina and I am a 17 year old senior. I have not attended any other high schools and have been at Henderson Bay since my freshman year. Attending Henderson Bay has helped expand my interest in dancing and photography as well as weight lifting. My future plan is to study to become a stage dancer and eventually become a dance photographer. ~Celina Dreams
I’ve always been a dreamer. Had high hopes And ambitions For myself. When they shattered To pieces, to shreds I thought I’d never complete The goal set for myself. Starvation, Truancy, Hospital bed After damn hospital bed. During sophomore year I was a worthless piece of trash That did not deserve to live. I had no purpose, no meaning And did not want to live Past seventeen. I wanted to graduate On time so bad But feared I couldn’t And just gave up on living. The thought To attend what used To be known as an Alternative high school Frightened me. What would the kids be like? Would I be “one of them?” A drug addict? A teenage mother? A high school dropout… Come September… Everyone was so Accepting, Kind. Welcoming. Friendly. Down to earth. Encouraging And motivational. None of the rumors spread At my home high school Were true. I could be myself Without being judged And felt like I fit in Where I belonged. The nine-month journey Of senior year Seemed to never end. September to June Seemed like an entire life time. To be honest, It passed in the blink of an eye. When I thought I wouldn’t pass The standardized tests I did. They picked me up when I fell And pushed me to keep going And never give up. Now, I am a community college student And realize I have so much to live for And will do everything it takes to Fulfill my dream of becoming A high school English teacher. Thank you to the Henderson Bay High School staff for assisting me through the journey of my senior year of high school to graduate on time. Each and every one of you have made an impact on my life in your own way and I will forever be grateful to each and every one of you. Sorry I haven’t visited since graduation! I want to some day! Much Love, Bre 😊 Bre is starting a blog. You can view her blog by going to: https://breanablogs.weebly.com/ Something new happens every year and some things end up changing. As everyone knows already we have switched gears and we are now in 2018!....A new year and new opportunities for everyone. 2017 may have been bad for most and good for some, but now that is in the past and we are moving into a new year where everything changes for everyone. The new year does bring something new to the table for each and everyone of us, the opportunity to change who we are or how we live our lives. But in order to have a successful change you cannot just wish it upon a star that you want it all to change. For instance, if you want to lose weight this year and become fit, you need to be willing to attempt to put time into your schedule so you can do that, and be willing to get up everyday to be willing to change your life around.
Resolutions aren’t just wishes, they may be wishes but these are wishes that you yourself have to accomplish. Do what you can to make your dreams possible, because new year’s resolutions aren't successful if you don't put a little backbone into them. We left one year behind and are in the next one, and just to make this interesting I do have a resolution and I think i will share it, I myself want to becoming better with writing. Writing stories, articles etc. Writing is a way to be sent to a different world, and a way to stay informative. We all have our dreams in life and the best way we can accomplish them is taking it by the hand and pursuing it, opening time to do what you love. Doing what you love and what makes you happy is the best thing…. good medicine for getting better with some laughter. But for this year at Henderson Bay High School (HBHS), we will still be having the fun we normally have as well as New Field Trips, volunteering opportunities for everyone and getting all the seniors for getting ready to graduate. We love our school and we want to make 2018 amazing for everyone here. ~Jai On Thursday the 9th, we have an assembly to celebrate for all of the veterans and the men and women who serve in the military. Today is a day to be thankful for every single person who was or is in the military currently. We from Henderson Bay High thank all the people in the military who have served or who are currently still serving.
Today John Webb spoke to us about the time he served and gave us a little backstory on his life. He was in the military, first starting out in the Marine Corp, and moved onto the Army after that. He came and spoke to us about our identity and what our purpose in life was. When he was growing up, like all of us in our lives of growing up, we all have difficulties that we have to work through. Struggling in life is something that is very hard, such examples are as if you were/are poor, lost family, or if you are alone, or even don’t know when or where your next meal is coming. John came from a tough life just like most of us, he grew up poor, so most of us understand what that life is like. With how difficult this was for him, he couldn’t find anything to make him happy, he couldn’t find happiness. When he reached into his teens, he still did not find the happiness he was looking for, and his mother got paid by cleaning people's homes. John wasn’t very happy with going and helping scrub people's toilets. But as he was doing so, he did find happiness, he found happiness serving his mother. Just by helping her out do work, that is where he found his happiness, and he wanted to continue on with that happiness. By the time he joined the military, he started learning more of his purpose in life. Again he started off in the Marine Corp for four years, moved onto the Army for six years, and then different organizations in Iraq for another four years. When he was being trained he learned that his purpose in life wasn’t just helping his family and friends, it was to help anyone he can help. While being trained he learned discipline and learned about brotherhood, that after training hard and fighting harder alongside them, they become your brothers. While John served in Iraq he didn’t know why he was there, then after being there he learned he was there to help the orphans and widows. And after a while, he became a custom with them and the hospitality they gave. He was built up more by the military and was happy with what he has done for everyone he can there. Our identity comes from what kind of person we are inside, or our personality, and what we are willing to do. John has two important rules he shared that he would like us to follow.
“Happiness in life isn’t what you get, it is what you give away.” Happiness is not about how we get it, its how we give it away to others. And it is something everyone deserves. We thank you John, for coming to us and talking about your experience and sharing your story. We again Thank you for coming. ~Jai In response to the recent hateful graffiti posted at PHS, Henderson Bay leadership students would like to say that we support and stand tall with PHS students in dealing with this situation and in working to create an accepting and loving environment. It is discouraging to hear that people are making such hateful comments about each other and the community around us. School should be a safe place for people to be comfortable being themselves, which is why this crime was such a horrific thing to do. Here at Henderson Bay, we accept and encourage each individual's views and beliefs. However, when it is blatant, hateful speech, like what happened at Peninsula High School, even if it’s intended as a joke, it should not be tolerated. To those who are spouting hateful rhetoric, you are not the kind of people we want to represent our school and district. Statements like this are created out of ignorance, and ignorance breeds ignorance. It is our duty to call out and condemn these sentiments. ~Henderson Leadership Are you aware of contracts as a way of recovering credits? If not, read on. First, these are only available if you have flunked the class. To make up the credit, you can take a contract. Contracts available include: Writing . Literature Fitness Art Senior Project (These are docx files). For PDF versions click Here: Writing, Literature, Fitness, Art, Senior Project.. Taking a contract course requires dedication and perseverance. Students should plan to spend as much time working in their course as they would if they were taking a course during a class period at the high school. This includes additional time for homework. Students must work on each class, each week. In addition, students must contact their teacher weekly via email, PIA messaging, by phone, or in-person. The purpose of this contact is to assist the student in meeting course objectives So, have you done a contract? Do you have an opinion on how well it worked for you? Please share.
