In Erin’s third period Nutrition and Food Prep class, her students are currently completing a food innovations FCCLA Star Event.
This is a student organization that is directly tied to all family consumer science courses.
FCCLA stands for “Family Career Community Leaders of America.” Because the Peninsula School District currently does not have a FCCLA club, that is the reasoning as to why Henderson Bay incorporates STAR events into the cooking curriculum. Food innovations is an individual or team event where students create their own prototype formula. Knowledge is shown in food science, nutrition, food preparation safety and product marketing. There are three main categories: junior, senior and occupational. Erin’s students are working individually in the junior category. Each student has to “develop a breakfast item featuring an ancient grain.”

You never quite know what will come out of the kitchen....but chances are you will have an opportunity to taste test the products. All is good in the neighborhood.
