IMPRESSIONISM & POST-IMPRESSIONISM

In Tate’s intro to art class, her students studied the time period of impressionism and post-impressionism. Impressionism is “a theory or practice in painting especially among French painters of 1870 depicting natural appearances of objects by strokes of primary unmixed colors.” Post-impressionism is “the work or style of a varied group of the late 19th and early 20th century artists.” These artists reacted against “the naturalism of the impressionists to explore color, line and form.” Artists of this time period had emotional responses which later led to the development of expressionism.

The era of impressionism and post-impressionism was the inspiration for their project and the technique they used was pointillism. Each student had to complete an art history poster to help them learn about artists from the time period. These artists from the time period focused more on light and color, rather than being realistic. Two examples of artists from the era of impressionism and post-impressionism include Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet.                    ~BRE

Yarn Bombing

In Tate’s 3D installation class, her students are currently working on a yarn bombing project. The inspiration for the project came from a gal named Kassie Mitchell where her artwork is based off of 6th Avenue in Tacoma. The reason Kassie decided to transform 6th avenue with her artistic craft and vision is because she grew up there. With a positive mindset, Mitchell’s goal is to bring smiles to the people that visit Tacoma. In an interview she stated that:

“I want to make this neighborhood as happy as possible. I live in this artistic and diverse neighborhood…why isn’t there more going on? This brightens up the neighborhood…and gives people something in common to talk about.”

Due to her artistic creations surrounding 6th Avenue, Kassie earned the title of “The Yarn Bomber of Tacoma.” The media of art she performs is referred to as Guerrilla Art for artists that wish to share their vision with the world. Guerrilla art is also a method of art making entailing leaving anonymous art pieces in public places whether to make a statement, share ideas, send out positive messages or for fun. ( The definition of guerrilla art came from Keri Smith.)

Also, the Henderson Bay art room is now on Instagram! It is an open account for students to follow. The username is hbhs_art.
